David Chavez was born in Deming, New Mexico, where at an early age he began drawing & painting. In high school, while continuing his art, he began designing sets for school musicals & dramatic plays. In 1970 he received his BFA with teaching credentials from the University of New Mexico.

It was during his college years that Chavez became involved in community theatre, which would eventually take him away from his artwork to become a professional choreographer, director & dancer. During the next 25 years, his artwork took a back seat as Chavez worked in motion pictures, television, concert performances & nightclub in Las Vegas.

Upon his return to New Mexico as Artistic Director with the New Mexico Ballet Company, Chavez took advantage of his return to New Mexico & began painting seriously again. In 1993 Chavez was asked to exhibit his artwork at Weems Galleries; then, a year later, he was asked to show at Weems Artfest '94. More art shows were to follow. Chavez now exhibits in all the top annual art shows in New Mexico.

In 1999 Chavez retired his dancing shoes in order to concentrate on his artwork full time. Chavez is most closely associated with the architecture & landscapes of New Mexico. His favorite media are Watercolor, Acrylic & Egg Tempera. His paintings capture the magic of the New Mexican light, from sultry summer days to the cold, barren landscapes of northern New Mexico winters.
