They squeal, giggle, jump around and whisper.  They are very patient, considering their average age is 10, and have been standing in line for quite sometime.  But then, they seem willing to wait their turns.  Are these children waiting in line to see a new Disney movie or to purchase the latest video game? No, they are standing in line waiting to be admitted to a place where they can buy art.  This is not fiction, but a reality that occurs every year at Weems Artfest in a special place called Children’s ArtSMart.   Over 40,000 children have shopped here. No, they are standing in line waiting to be admitted to a place where they can buy art.  This is not fiction, but a reality that occurs every year at Weems Artfest in a special place called Children’s ArtSMart.   Over 40,000 children have shopped here. ArtSMart was developed to introduce children to the vast quantity of art being created around them.  The concept was to create an environment where children are exposed to, and learn about buying artwork at a very early age, thus preventing the intimidation factor many people develop about purchasing art as adults. With the enthusiastic support of the participating ARTFEST artists, ArtSMart became a special place where children 11 years old and under can purchase artwork at a price they can comprehend and afford.  No ADULTS ARE ALLOWED!  The artists place their normal artwork in this area, but no price tag can exceed $10.00.  Each year the public schools bring over 1000 children, free of charge, to view and participate in this area, and the entire show.  The children’s area now encompasses an entire building, so that in addition to Children’s ArtSMart, children’s activities at ARTFEST also include various civic organizations with hands-on activities for the children.
